Sally McKinney has gazed at the world from the deck of sailing ship, from an open cockpit biplane, from a renovated rice barge, even a dugout canoe. Her travel articles and photographs have been seen by readers across North America and around the Pacific Rim. For a list of credits, visit the Articles page.

Visits to 39 countries on five continents have given this travel writer a unique appreciation for life on this planet. What’s more, she has learned how everyone benefits from sustaining the natural environment:  dining on fresh, regional foods; respecting other religions and cultures; highlighting facets that make each destination unique.

As a young girl in Valparaiso, Indiana, she began exploring at age eleven. She pedaled a bicycle along dusty roads to drink from a spring water fountain; hiked Indiana Dunes backcountry with her sister, Judy Brown; and paddled a canoe on the swirling, silty water of the Tippecanoe River. A quiet girl who loved to read, she eventually earned academic degrees in Psychology (B.A., DePauw University, 1955); Education (B.S., Indiana University, 1956); and English Language and Literature (M.A., Butler University, 1963).

While raising four teenage boys as a single parent, she launched a business called The Evergreen Street Word & Picture Company. Work projects ranged from preparing direct mail and brochure copy to writing audio scripts and organizing slideshows. Encouraged by an art fair photography award, she began traveling with a notebook and camera in 1985. In 1989, she was accepted for membership in the Society of American Travel Writers. She also belongs to the Travel Journalists Guild. Recently, Sally received notice that her biographic profile will appear in the 25th edition of Marquis Who’s Who of American Women.
